This year Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council’s Road Safety team nominated a committed teacher Craig Jones of Sandfields Primary School for his contribution to Road Safety for the annual Welsh Road Safety Awards.
The Road Safety team are delighted to announce that Craig was selected by Road Safety Wales as a worthy winner of one of the awards.
The Welsh Road Safety Awards (ROSPA) recognises the good road safety practice, innovative projects and personal contributions being undertaken in Wales. The Award Scheme publicises and raises awareness of the contributions towards road casualty reduction targets.
For many years Mr Craig Jones has been proactive in promoting Road Safety within his school, following major changes in the infrastructure in and around the locality. Craig has been proactive in making his pupils aware of all new changes to their school routes as well as becoming familiar with new safer crossing places.
In preparation for the infrastructure changes, Craig became actively involved in Road Safety by creating a specific Road Safety After School club. This after school club is unique to Neath Port Talbot and is a huge success.
Craig manages to recruit and retain pupils each week by running different projects to tackle important issues such as safer crossing places and routes to school as well as inviting the road safety team in to promote safer cycling and other general road safety lessons. The pupils are encouraged to take ownership of the club by designing their own badge which Craig then made up and distributed so all pupils knew who to approach in the school for Road Safety advice.
He has encouraged the pupils to take notice of their surroundings in order to take responsibility in looking after their personal safety, especially in light of the massive changes within the immediate vicinity of the school.
Craig Jones is a well- deserved winner of this award. He has worked consistently to involve both the school and its pupils in a wide range of Road Safety issues and improving road safety awareness. It seems Craig’s enthusiasm of the topic never fails to dwindle.
Craig, along with his Head Teacher, Mrs Shirley Davies attended the Awards ceremony as part of the Road Safety Wales annual conference on Tuesday 21st September 2010 in Llandrindod Wells.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Ali Thomas said today, “We are so pleased to hear that Craig Jones of Sandfields Primary School has been such a worthy winner of this prestigious award. Craig has been an ambassador for his school as well as Neath Port Talbot Council and we are all very proud of his hard work, enthusiasm and commitment to such an important topic. We are delighted Road Safety Wales have recognised his achievements.”
