Funded by the Welsh Assembly Government as part of the Tidy Town initiative and with the assistance of Keep Wales Tidy, Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council are conducting a tyre amnesty on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th September 2010.
The purpose of the amnesty is to improve local environmental quality and has been organised to coincide with Tidy Wales Week 2010.The event allows for members of the community to bring along their unwanted tyres, on or off the rim, and have them recycled free of charge at our specified re-cycling centres. Tyres from commercial sources will not be accepted.
Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council Ali Thomas said, “This is an excellent opportunity for local residents to re-cycle their unwanted tyres.
“Unfortunately a small minority of residents dispose of their used tyres indiscriminately across the Borough and run the risk of a hefty fine. The costs of such actions add considerably to the authority’s waste disposal bill which is borne by every council tax payer. By working together with the community we can resolve this problem and ensure our local areas are clean and tidy”
The amnesty is only open to domestic residents of Neath Port Talbot. All the sites will be continuously manned and will ask for proof of residency, such as a recent utility bill, council tax bill, or driving licence. Anyone not able to provide domestic identification will be turned away, as will any traders or business operators. Tyres can be accepted between the hours of 9.00am to 5.00pm on the designated week end.
This is the third Tidy Towns Tyre Amnesty. Previous tyre amnesty events have been conducted over a 5 day period, with the number of tyres collected totalling in excess of 2,700.
