Winter may seem to be lasting forever but beach lovers can still get a taste of the summer and get fit at the same time.
Surfers and water sports fans can hone techniques, learn safety skills and improve fitness by taking part in the innovative Surf Fitness sessions at the Wales National Pool.
Pool General Manager Jeremy Cole said: “Swansea is a surfing destination but we don’t necessarily get the Californian weather which makes these sessions great for local surfers. We are a centre for swimming excellence but we are set to offer an increasing variety of original water-based fitness sessions which tap into emerging sporting trends such as triathlon and waterpolo.
“Surf Fitness sessions are not just aimed at surfers but they are also a fun way for anyone to improve their fitness and stick to their New Year’s resolutions.”
The sessions run on Thursday evenings from 8pm. There are concessions for students, over 60s and Wales National Pool Members.
Surfer and qualified lifeguard and swimming coach Ben Room is the session instructor.
He said: “The session is split into two and is tailored to different abilities. It’s basically aimed at strengthening core muscles and getting fitter.
“There is also a water safety aspect to the sessions. Even a strong swimmer can be surprised to realise how hard it is to tow a fully-clothed friend even in a controlled pool environment after swimming a few lengths.”
