Officers in training for charity event

Four Gwent Police officers, have for the last year dedicated their lives to raising money for the Meningitis Trust after one of them lost a loved one to the disease. Their fundraising will culminate in trek from The Amazon to The Andes at the end of April.

Support group officers PC Helyn Harris and PC Holly Richardson and PC Gemma Price and PC Sian Taylor who work in Maindee will be joined by Sian’s sister Sarah Taylor and friend Chloe Chapman.

As part of their fund raising activities, the women have organised “A Night at the Races” at Rodney Parade, Newport taking place on Friday March 5th from 7pm until 12 midnight where computerised “horse racing” will be played all night, as well as live bands and raffles.

The women, who aim to raise £12,000 for the charity, have already taken part in numerous fundraising activities over the past year including car washing, bag packing at local supermarkets, fetes, street collecting throughout the Six Nations and at the opening of St Davids 2 shopping centre.

PC Helyn Harris is hopeful they will reach their target:

“We are all motivated women and we thought we would give this a go. Its for such a good cause and the more people we speak to the more people we find have been effected by the disease. We are funding the Andes trek ourselves and it is a magnificent personal challenge in hiking over miles of jungle terrain. We are grateful for the support of colleagues,”

Anybody who would like to attend “A Night at the Races” is asked to reserve tickets at www.justgiving.com/helyn-harris and donate £5 for a ticket.
