Official launch for Gower College Swansea

Wales’ newest college was officially launched on 22nd October with a special ceremony focusing on student success.

Among the guests celebrating the launch of Gower College Swansea was Leighton Andrews AM, Minister for Children, Education and Lifelong Learning, who unveiled a commemorative plaque at Tycoch to mark the occasion.

“Contributions from students formed the centrepiece of the day,” says Principal and Chief Executive Nick Bennett. “Guests were greeted by Travel and Tourism students as they arrived before being treated to a musical theatre piece by Performing Arts students in the main hall. A range of student artwork and photography was on display and a delicious buffet was prepared for the occasion by the Catering and Hospitality team.”

The official launch of the college was seen as a significant milestone for Welsh further education.

“I commend the way both Swansea and Gorseinon have worked together to achieve this merger, it’s an excellent example of the Welsh Assembly Government’s Transformation Agenda in action,” says Education Minister Leighton Andrews. “The new institution can now build on the best bits the individual colleges offered, combining the strengths of both and heralding an exciting future for the learners of Swansea.”

The merging of Swansea College and Gorseinon College to form Gower College Swansea heralded a new era of post-compulsory education in Swansea – an era of cooperation, widened choice and improved access.

Gower College Swansea is now the third largest FE establishment in Wales, with approximately 1,100 staff and 17,000 students. The campus is spread over two main sites, at Belgrave Road, Gorseinon and Tycoch Road, Swansea, plus a number of smaller ‘satellite’ centres.
