Gwynedd Council will officially open a brand-new recycling centre in Dolgellau on Friday, 24 February 2012. The new facility – which will be open to the public from 25 February – will be officially opened by Council Chairman, Councillor John Gwilym Jones.
As part of the celebration to note the opening of the new recycling centre, pupils from Ysgol Gynradd Dolgellau will also be in attendance and they will have an opportunity to see how the new facility will work.
The Dolgellau recycling centre will be Gwynedd Council’s seventh such facility and will include the general recycling banks for paper, glass, cans and textiles, skips will also be provided for other domestic waste to be recycled, from scrap metal and garden waste to car batteries and large electrical appliances.
Councillor Arwel Pierce, who leads on Highways and Municipal matter for Gwynedd Council:
“The network of recycling centres have become very popular facilities in communities across Gwynedd and we are delighted that a brand-new centre will be available in Dolgellau for local residents. The centre will provide an invaluable resource in the south Meirionnydd area and will allow local people to play their part in making Gwynedd a greener and better place to live.
“We are confident that the residents of Dolgellau and nearby communities will make the most of the recycling centre and we hope that the children who attend the opening of the new centre will encourage their families and neighbours to make full use of this important facility.”
Councillor Gareth Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Senior Portfolio Leader for the Environment added:
“A real team effort by local people and Gwynedd Council means that the county has a recycling record that we can all be proud of with 46% of Gwynedd’s waste now being recycled, composted or re-used. However, we cannot rest on our laurels and it is important that we continue to make the most of the excellent facilities available in the county to ensure we reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill sites.
“The challenge is to increase the volume of waste we recycle even further so that Gwynedd can reach the 52% target set by the Welsh Government by March 2013. We are confident that with the willing and much appreciated efforts of the local residents, the opening of this new recycling centre at Dolgellau, along with the facilities already available in other parts of the county we can reach this target and boost the amount of waste we recycle, compost and re-use.”
