Older people from the Neath Port Talbot area met with Ruth Marks, the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales last week. The day was a chance for them to give her their views and opinions about the issues which affect them.
The event was hosted by the Neath Port Talbot Older Persons’ Council (OPC) at the Aberavon Beach Hotel on Wednesday 2nd December. Over 50 people representing more than 30 older people’s organisations throughout the county borough attended.
In addition to the Commissioner’s address, the session featured presentations by the chair of the Council Clive Owen who spoke about on transport issues. In addition the Older Persons’ Champion Councillor Peter Rees spoke about the changing needs of older people in the modern world. These were followed by a lively question and answer session with the Commissioner which covered topics such as pension provision, access to transport, Doctors and prescriptions, and continued funding for the voluntary sector.
Ruth Marks said:
“It has been a pleasure to visit Neath Port Talbot and meet representatives of the Older Persons’ Council. Events like this are key in helping me find out what matters to older people and fulfil my role of championing the rights of older people. I have been impressed by the enthusiasm of those present and the scope of topics raised today.”
Leader of the Council Ali Thomas said,
“I would like to thank the Commissioner for wanting to meet with us. The Older Person’s Council in Neath Port Talbot is made up of people who have a desire to improve services for their peers and for future generations of older people. Events such as this are both positive and productive.”
