Olympic star visits Anglesey

Commonwealth Silver medallist and Olympic athlete Matt Elias attended a athletics festival last week at Plas Arthur leisure centre.

Organised by the Isle of Anglesey County Council’s Sports Development Unit in conjunction with Welsh Athletics over 40 children had a week long fun of athletics activities.

Matt Elias made an appearance on the final day of the festival to chat to youngsters about his career and answer any budding questions.

Event organiser Barry Edwards, said ‘We have had a fantastic response for this event, it’s the first of its kind on Anglesey and we are very pleased that the children have enjoyed themselves and had the opportunity to meet a national star, its been a great success.’

One child taking part, Iestyn Jones from Rhosybol, said ‘I had so much fun, it was a cool week I made lots of friends.’

Following its success the event will be held again in the summer months next year. The Sport Development Unit continually works to develop sports in the community and works with a variety of partners. However they do rely on volunteers to assist in most of their activities.
