Independent care providers in Wales are outraged over plans to impose a “massive increase” of more than 22 per cent in the cost of carrying out criminal record checks.
The Westminster Government has announced that Enhanced CRB Checks will be going up from £36 to £44 in April.
The news has angered Care Forum Wales, the main representative body for the care sector in Wales.
Honorary Chief Executive Mario Kreft said: “It is an absolute outrage and this massive increase in the cost comes at the worst possible time.
“We have care homes across Wales going into administration or having to close because the unsustainably low fees paid by local authorities mean they are not viable businesses.
“It is unbelievable that this additional financial burden is being imposed on the care sector and voluntary organisations when services at the sharp end are being removed or reduced.
“Imposing a hike of more than 22 per cent shows a complete disconnect with financial reality.
“This is also going to hit voluntary organisations very hard because staff employed by them are obliged to have CRB clearance.
“It is frankly irrelevant that the price of the Standard CRB check is being frozen because we have to conduct Enhanced checks when we employ staff.
“At a time when budgets are being squeezed, the ones who will suffer most because of this unreasonable increase are elderly and vulnerable people across Wales.
“The care sector is really struggling – and this feels like another kick in the teeth.”
The price increase is due to be introduced on April 6.
