Members of South West Rhyl Over 50’s Club in Rhyl have been told how to give cold callers the cold shoulder.
‘Check callers ID’ and ‘ensure the caller is who they claim to be’ – were two of main messages delivered in a presentation by local Community Beat Manager PC Stephanie Ball when she met up with over 40 members of the group at one of their most recent meetings.
“Distraction burglars will try a number of different tactics to get into your home – so it is essential that people of all ages are on their guard when they open the door to unknown or unexpected callers,” said PC Ball who delivered the presentation with PCSO Phil Roberts and the assistance of Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators Darren and Pam Gardner.
“One of the most common tactics bogus callers use is that they claim to be calling on behalf of the ‘water board’. We want to remind residents that there is no such thing as the ‘water board,” added PC Ball.
“We urge everyone to check the identity of the caller – genuine callers will always be happy to wait while you do this and if you have any suspicions please call police immediately on 101.”
Following the presentation, which was based on the latest All Wales ‘Ice Man’ campaign, all group members present were handed a bag containing safety stickers for doors, leaflets and other useful goods. Prevention advice was also given on the day about telephone scams.
PC Ball added: “Our hope is that all the members will display the stickers and follow all the advice given to them. This way we can help ensure that less and less people fall victim to cold callers.”
The club meets every Tuesday at Rhyl Rugby Club between 11-3pm & welcomes any new members.
