After spending 24hrs in a custom built ‘police’ kart, a team of response officers from Cardiff have raised over £3,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care Hospice, in Penarth. The team led by PC Darren Westall were looking to break a world record for the team distance covered on go-karts at an indoor track during a 24 hour period, which stands at 955 miles.
Despite some brilliant endurance driving during the day and night, and very sore ribs, the officers came just short of their target, covering approximately 715 miles (that’s 3240 laps).
The record breaking attempt took place at Teamsport Cardiff, starting at 16:00 on Monday 17th and finishing 24hrs later on Tuesday 18th January 2011.
The response officer race team consisted of PC Darren Westall, PC Joe Mcelroy, PC Dan Hillier, and PC Andy Nicoll, who all put their response driving experience to full use on the track.
PC Darren Westall said “The most important thing was to give something back to the hospice, who did a great job in caring for my mother before she sadly passed away. Me and the lads give the record our best shot and are delighted to raise funds for Marie Curie. We have had a lot of support from family, friends, and local businesses, who together made the event successful.”
