A plot of land in Risca is to be re-established as an allotment site after Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet gave the scheme the green light recently.
Cabinet recently (19th October) agreed to lease the former allotment site at Crescent Road/Grove Road in Risca to the Islwyn Allotment Federation to re-establish as allotments.
Cllr Colin Mann, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Finance, Resources and Sustainability said, “Cabinet were delighted to be able to agree to the proposal to re-establish an allotment site on this plot of land in Risca.”
“This is the third plot of land we have leased out for use as allotments in the county borough in the last two months, and we as a Council are committed to looking at ways of developing even more allotment land, in line with the current nationwide increase in demand for allotments”.
The plot of land was initially leased by Gwent County Council to Islwyn Borough Council for allotment use, although this lease ceased in the 1980’s.
Cllr Mann continued, “The re-establishment of this site as an allotment will mean that this previously overgrown site will help meet the demand for allotment plots in the Risca area. Also, the sustainability and health benefits to be gained from allotments are many and help contribute to creating a more physically active environment.”
The Islwyn Allotment Federation is prepared to commit £5,000 to site clearance and fencing to bring the site into beneficial use, and is willing to take on the management of the site.
