Oxjam Brecon Music Festival returns for a third year on Saturday October 15th. In total, 50 bands and solo artists of all genres will play in Brecon in aid of Oxfam.
The day will include appearances by Revoker and The Last Republic alongside Under The Driftwood Tree. Another highlight is an appearance by US Singer Songwriter Pamela Wyn Shannon.
Stewart Webb of Oxjam Brecon said “ We’re delighted that so many great acts are playing for us on the big day – having bands from festivals such as The Green Man and Merthyr Rock on board is the icing on the cake – all the artists are playing for free and the festival is staffed entirely by volunteers”
In these days of large commercial festivals with £100+ tickets and the long distance pilgrimages to Glastonbury or V festival, Oxjam is very different.
Oxfam’s nationwide charity festival is built “from the bottom” up as it is organised by local music enthusiasts across the UK town by town united under the banner of “Local Music.Global Impact”.
The main Oxjam “Takeover Days” now take place in 37 towns in the month of October with Brecon being easily the smallest town by population. And yet Oxjam Brecon is highly successful, having raised over £10,000 for Oxfam over the last two years. Oxjam Brecon is targetting £7,000 this year alone.
The festival launches at 1.30 at The George Hotel which has a strong Indie /alt programme including The Last Republic and The Undivided. The opening band is Italian success story Sunday Recovery who have sold millions in their home country but are little known in Britain.
The music then spreads out across 4 other venues (Theatr Brycheiniog, The Gremlin, The Markets Tavern and Northcote Con Club) and continues through to the small hours with the emphasis on original music.
Oxjam Brecon’s David Brockwell added “We aim to showcase the best in new music from Wales and nearby with a good representation of our own local music scene and it seems to work. We have a terrific line up and 5 great venues for October 15th – a single £7 ticket gets you in to them all.”
