Volunteers bring together over 40 local musicians and promoters to create a 10-hour music festival aiming to raise £4000 for Oxfam
This Sunday, 3rd October 2010 marks the return of the Oxjam Cardiff Takeover to Womanby Street. Musicians and volunteers have been working hard over the last 5 months to bring this marathon event back to Cardiff and are looking to raise £4,000 in aid of Oxfam. The volunteer team have recruited some well known musical legends from South Wales to curate stages to help reach that target.
These diverse curators include Taint, BBC Introducing’s Bethan Elfyn, Associated Minds, Starving Artists, Whistling Biscuits, Gathered In Song, The Miniature Music Press and Péchés Mignons.
The event will also mark the last EVER Taint show in Cardiff, as the band announced their intention to disband via their website www.taint.co.uk. Nation Radio are also supporting the Oxjam Cardiff team to reach their fundraising target by sponsoring Taint’s stage upstairs in Clwb Ifor Bach and running a competition to WIN two tickets to the Oxjam Cardiff Takeover plus two meals at Hard Rock and a room in the Big Sleep Hotel on the 3rd of October!
“I’m really looking forward to putting on this event with Oxjam. Its important to support the great work they do on the international field, wherever people are in desperate need. The music industry can be one of the most shallow places to work, and now and again we need to stop and take stock of ourselves, get together and raise a little money for others. The line up will be the best of some exciting new bands from Wales. Come have fun, and do some good too!” said BBC Introducing’s Bethan Elfyn.
In order to put on this 10 hour, multi-venue event the Oxjam Cardiff volunteer team have undertaken a number of fundraising challenges including hosting a Green Man Festival themed quiz night and sponsored Waxjam. The final challenge took place last Saturday where bands from Cardiff, and Oxfam volunteers, set themselves the challenge of completing a buskathon to raise much needed funds for Oxfam. The talented musicians busked at famous landmarks around Cardiff City Centre, so that local residents and visitors could enjoy the sounds of live music. The buskathon started at midday and took place at iconic locations including Cardiff Castle, St Johns Church, Cardiff Market and Queen Street.
The Oxjam Cardiff Takeover event on the 3rd of October also launches an entire month of Oxjam events in South East Wales, where volunteers have been recruited and trained to put on their own events to raise money for Oxfam.

“We are really excited about our event this year. Having the local bands and promoters as stage curators provides not only an amazing line up but a great inspiration for everyone who comes along to the Oxjam Cardiff Takeover and sees that the local live music scene is working together for such a worthy cause. All of the hard work and dedication of our volunteers and bands is aweinspiring. We hope that together we will smash our £4000 target and support the vital work of Oxfam all around the world,” said volunteer and Oxjam Cardiff Regional Manager, Gemma White.
