An event to be held at ADAS Pwllpeiran, Cwmystwyth, Ceredigion SY23 4AB on Wednesday 25 May 2011 will be an opportunity to find out more about parasite control and how to improve your flock/herd performance. The event is being organised by Organic Centre Wales as part of the Farming Connect Organic Development Programme, and will be useful for both organic and conventional farmers.
Internal parasites, including gastrointestinal worms and liver fluke, can have a devastating effect on both the physical and financial performance of both cattle and sheep enterprises. This workshop will bring together a small group of specialists to help answer some of the key questions on this important topic. The workshop will cover issues such as the effect of changing seasonal weather, the effect of parasites on the quantity of food produced, trace element deficiencies and their effects on animal resilience to parasites, management practices to reduce treatments needed and to avoid anthelmintic resistance.
“The large percentage of livers rejected at abattoirs due to liver fluke have economic consequences to both the farmer and the abattoir,” said Mair Morgan, ADAS, one of the event speakers and organisers. “At this event, we intend to share information on the impact of parasites on the physical and financial performance of your flock/herd and the most appropriate ways to control them.”
Also In attendance at the all day event will be Gavin Morris, vet at Dunbia, Harriet Fuller Independent vet and Mari Jones of Organic Centre Wales. In the morning session Mair Morgan and Harriet Fuller will lead a discussion on the current parasite issues and control methods. In the afternoon Gavin Morris will lead a practical session looking at rejected livers and discuss the impact on the food chain.
