Gardening gurus from Swansea Council’s parks team are going for three titles on the trot at this year’s Royal Welsh Show.
Workers in the Specialist Parks Service are making final preparations on their floral displays before they head up to Llanelwedd to compete against their contemporaries across Wales.
The team is hoping to replicate the success of the last two years when their efforts led to the Plas Power Perpetual Challenge Trophy for best in class and successive large gold medals- the show’s highest honour.
The Royal Welsh Show is one of the most prestigious events on the annual calendar. It attracts around 250,000 visitors a year and takes place from Monday July 19 to Thursday July 22.
Swansea Council’s parks team will have a colourful display available for public viewing in the floral marquee.
Steve Protheroe, Swansea Council’s Specialist Parks Manager, said: “We’ve been working very hard in Singleton Park’s nursery to get the plants ready for our exhibit and this year we’ll be featuring an ornamental gazebo with hanging baskets, a water feature and informal bedding.
“Marigolds, Begonias and Dahlias make up the bulk of the floral element which will replicate the bedding schemes in the Singleton Botanical Gardens. We’re also including plants such as Astilbe Heuchera and grasses that can be seen in Clyne Gardens.”
The botanical gardens in Singleton Park will play host to the Botanics in Bloom festivities throughout August after the Royal Welsh Show. The event takes place every year to celebrate the gardens when they’re at their most colourful.
The event includes guided walks and tours, band concerts, plant sales and children’s activities.
