Flintshire County Council has received an award for working in partnership with a prestigious charity to protect open spaces.

The title of Partner of the Year (Local Authority) was handed out at an awards ceremony held at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on Thursday 28 November.

It celebrates the work that Flintshire has been undertaking with the charity Fields In Trust to gain Queen Elizabeth II Field status for 15 recreation areas and playing fields across the county. This protects the areas through a deed agreed between the landowners, Flintshire County Council, and Fields in Trust, restricting use of the land for outdoor play, sport and recreation.

Councillor Kevin Jones, Cabinet Member for Waste Strategy, Public Protection and Leisure said:

“We are delighted to have been recognised for all the work we have been doing alongside Fields In Trust. This partnership has been fundamental to enable us to protect open spaces for the people of Flintshire and for generations to come. Recreation grounds are vital resources for the communities they serve and we are only too pleased to secure the future of the 15 outdoor recreational spaces.”

Supported by the Duke of Cambridge’s patronage, the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge protects public open spaces and acts as a tangible legacy for both HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the 2012 Olympics.

The Fields in Trust Awards showcase and celebrate the organisations and individuals that have most fully engaged with the concepts of Fields in Trust.
