Partnership working is the key to successful lobbying over future EU funding for Wales. This key message was delivered by WLGA and WCVA delegates during a visit to Brussels this week.
Representing the WLGA, Cllr Chris Holley (Swansea), WLGA Europe and Regeneration Spokesperson said:
“Following the publication of the EU budget proposal for the 2014-2020 programming period, we are in Brussels at a crucial time to lobby over future EU funding for Wales. These visits are essential to acquire valuable new contacts, gain intelligence and learn about the latest Commission thinking first hand.
We have met with a number of influential Commission officials to discuss the key policy areas that are of crucial importance to Wales. What has emerged is the need for a strong partnership approach between the Welsh Government, local government and the third sector in order to maximise our lobbying opportunities in the preparation and implementation of future EU funded programmes for Wales.
Over the coming weeks I will be meeting with the Welsh Government Deputy Minister for EU Programmes and look forward to further cooperation with the Welsh Government over the next two years in order to maximise benefits from EU funded programmes for Wales.”
The WLGA and WCVA delegation visit complemented a visit to Brussels in June by Welsh Government Deputy Minister for EU Programmes, Alun Davies AM (23-24 June) .
During their visit this week, the WLGA and WCVA delegation met with key European Commission officials, including the Deputy Director General for Regional Policy, as well as representatives from the UK Permanent Representation to the EU and the current Polish Presidency of the EU Council.
Discussions were held around the future of EU cohesion policy and the implications of the much anticipated EU budget proposal post-2013.
