Party marks opening of Groesfaen Community Garden

An exciting new community garden has been officially opened in Groesfan and a special party was held this week for local people to celebrate the occasion.

CCBC Mayor, Cllr John Evans, unveiled the new site that has been developed on an area of land at Groesfaen near Deri.

The scheme has been a working partnership between the council, the Deri and Groesfaen Community Partnership, the Groesfaen Residents Association, GAVO and Groundwork Caerphilly.

The local community were keen for the land to be improved, specifically as a recreational space for adults and a creative play space for children. The council secured funding from the Welsh Assembly Government, via the Heads of the Valleys Programme and, following consultation with the local community, a landscaping design for the site was drawn up.

As part of this process local residents, with the aid of the council, appointed an environmental artist Jenny Hall to develop the project. Jenny worked with the landscape architect for the project and the local community in developing her ideas. This process included activities such as a community walk around the Groesfaen/Deri area, den-making and a story-telling night on the site.

“I’m delighted to open this fantastic new community space, ” said Cllr John Evans, “The garden has been created for local people and visitors to enjoy, breathing new life into a previously under-used area of land and I’m sure it will benefits the community for years to come.”
