Woodland in Flintshire has been recognised for the sixth year in a row by a leading environmental charity. Pen y Maes Woods in Holywell has been granted a Green Flag Community Award from Keep Wales Tidy (KWT) for quality green space managed by a voluntary group.
The Friends of Pen y Maes Woods maintain the County Council owned space with help from the Countryside Rangers.
The Green Flag Award is a UK-wide partnership, delivered in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy. It recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces in the country as well as helping to drive up the quality of green space. This year, 65 parks and 37 community managed green spaces have been awarded recognition for their excellent facilities as well as their commitment to delivering great quality green space for communities in Wales.
Councillor Bernie Attridge, Cabinet Member for Environment said: “We are extremely pleased that Pen y Maes Woods, and the work of its Friends, has been recognised once again for being an excellent green space for the local community. I would like to thank the Friends of Pen y Maes Woods who work hard to maintain the woodland, working on practical tasks within the woods including fencing, tree planting, hedge laying, woodland management, footpath work and litter picking.”
Secretary of Friends of Pen y Maes Woods, Robin Baker, said
“To win the prestigious Green Flag award for the sixth consecutive year will be a big boost for our small band of volunteers. Keeping the woodland tidy and litter free can sometimes seem a thankless task but our Green Flag Award makes it all worthwhile. The award follows our recent success in Flintshire’s Best Kept Communities Competition and really is the ‘icing on the cake’.”
