Penrhiwceiber welcomes its new road safety champions

Penrhiwceiber Primary School have welcomed a team of important junior officers who will work to keep themselves and classmates safe when out and about.

The school has recently celebrated the appointment of its Junior Road Safety Officers:

Imogen John and Charlie Thomas in Year 5 and Shannon Evans and Ewan Edwards in Year 6.

The foursome will work with the Council’s Road Safety Unit to raise awareness across the school community about road safety, being a safe pedestrian, cycling skills and more.

They will also engage with parents and teachers about issues such as illegal and inconsiderate parking outside the school gates and work to ensure everyone has the skills, information and confidence they need to be safe pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

The appointment of, and work with, JRSOs is just part of the extensive work undertaken in schools by the Road Safety Unit and its partners at South Wales Police and South Wales Fire and Rescue.

Every day, in schools across Rhondda Cynon Taf, pupils are attending information and training sessions, proficiency tests and more to learn the skills they need to stay safe.

Cllr Andrew Morgan, Cabinet Member for Customer Care and Transport, said: “Road safety is an important issue for us and we have an ongoing campaign to ensure schoolchildren are safe as they make their way to and from classes.

“A key part of this is appointing the JRSOs so they can be ambassadors for the issue and help their classmates to be aware.

“Welcome to the latest group of JRSOs in Penrhiwceiber – I am sure they are going to do an excellent job”.
