People in Peacehaven, Tredegar, say “No Thanks’ to cold callers

‘Cold Callers’ are to be frozen out in Peacehaven, Tredegar after over 98% of residents voted to become the first No Cold Calling Zone in Blaenau Gwent.

The Council’s Trading Standards have teamed up with Gwent Police to launch the new zone where doorstep sellers are not welcome. Street signs have been erected and window stickers are being displayed asking sales people not to call.

Trading Standards consulted with residents following a recent spate of incidents involving rogue traders. They worked with local police officers team to take this action and protect vulnerable people in the community.

The majority of people who knock on doors for business are likely to be genuine. However, the technique of turning up unannounced is also often used by thieves to trick their way into homes.

Councillor John Hopkins, Blaenau Gwent Council’s Executive Member for Crime, Disorder and Safer Communities says: “Any scheme which is set up to protect the community by deterring uninvited callers is a positive thing and we will support any initiative which will improve the quality of life for local people.”
