Pitch penalty gives Glamorgan a doubly negative start

Clydesdale Bank 40 League, Sophia Gardens
Somerset (2pts) beat Glamorgan (-1pts) by 38 runs

Glamorgan slumped to a 38-run defeat in their opening Clydesdale Bank 40 League fixture against Somerset at Sophia Gardens.

The Welsh county actually ended with minus-one points from the game after a two-point deduction for a poor pitch last season – halved on appeal – was officially taken off after Sunday’s match.

Somerset won the toss and decided to bat but Glamorgan made a positive start when David Harrison trapped Arul Suppiah LBW for 0 and then took the prize wicket of Marcus Trescothick for just 15 when he edged to wicketkeeper Mark Wallace.

However the West Country side recovered well to post 224-5 from their 40 overs. Winter signing Nick Compton struck 78 and youngster James Hildreth 68 from 59 balls to leave Glamorgan with a difficult task in reply.

Mark Cosgrove began strongly with six boundaries in his 31 but he was the only notable score in the top four. However, the lower order rallied and Tom Maynard’s 48 kept the home side in the chase but Ben Phillips removed David Brown and Wallace just as they were getting going and Glamorgan fell to 186 all out.
