Plaid Cymru’s Chris Franks has welcomed news that the Welsh Government is investing in several hospitals in his region.
The announcement was contained within plans for a £1.3 billion capital spending programme for 2011/12.
The Cardiff and Vale University Health Board will be given funds to progress the Phase 2 of the Children’s Hospital at the University Hospital of Wales, further the redevelopment of the Cardiff Royal Infirmary and install a new EMI (Elderly Mentally Infirm) unit at Llandough hospital.
Velindre Trust was also given money along and the Cwm Taf Local Health Board will use their slice of the capital spending programme on the Cynon Valley Neighbourhood Hospital.
Chris Franks AM, who represents the South Wales Central region which covers Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan and RCT, said: “This is proof positive that this Welsh Government is prioritising the NHS and is determined to deliver the best possible service for patients.
“We were dealt a very poor hand by the Con/Dem Coalition Government with our financial settlement and some very tough decisions had to be made. I am pleased that we have been able to present an extensive programme of capital works that will see health services improved throughout the South Wales Central.
“We face difficult times ahead of us but this capital programme underlines the fact Plaid in Government will always put the people of Wales and our health service first, as shown by the hospital closures we prevented when we entered into coalition negotiations with the Labour party in 2007.
“We will continue to put the health service and the needs of the most vulnerable first for as long as the electorate place their faith in us.”
