Plaid Cymru members have selected campaigning Treorci councillor Sêra Evans-Fear as its candidate for the Rhondda constituency at next year’s National Assembly election.
Sêra, 28, who is married to Gareth and has a 14-month-old son, Gruffudd Gwyn, works at the University of Glamorgan in Treforest supporting young people with their applications to Higher Education.
Cwmparc-born Sêra attended Ysgol Gyfun Cymer Rhondda and the University of Oxford where she obtained a degree in Modern Languages and Linguistics. She was elected to Rhondda Cynon Taf council in 2008 when just 26.
Sêra said: “The Rhondda needs a change. It needs to be revived and made into a place young people who go away to university and work and want to come back to.
“Jobs are crucial to our future in the Rhondda. Research out earlier this month showed Wales would be slow to recover with and it will take until 2025 or later before employment levels return to their previous peak.
“The National Assembly will be vital in turning the Rhondda around and needs to be as strong as possible. As a Councillor I hear many concerns about crime from residents in my ward. So it is also vital we do everything we can to ensure that crime doesn’t go up in the Rhondda as police and probation officers numbers are cut. I support the devolution of police and probation services, prisons and courts to Wales,” added Sêra.
Rhondda-born Leanne Wood, Plaid AM for South Wales Central, said: “I’m very happy to endorse Sêra as Plaid Cymru’s candidate for the Rhondda in next year’s Assembly election.
“She has had great experience in her role as a councillor in Treorci and in her work in the University of Glamorgan, which stands her in good stead to be a strong voice for the Rhondda in the Assembly.
“The Rhondda needs a change if we are to have any chance of a decent future and Sêra has the character to be a breath of fresh air in Welsh politics. I’m looking forward to going around the streets with her in the coming months, letting people know what a fantastic representative she will be, if they are prepared to give her a chance.”
