Plaid Cymru AM Leanne Wood today condemned the UK Coalition Government’s decision to hire an anti-abortion group Life to advise on sexual health.
Leanne Wood, who represents South Wales Central, said: “I’m very concerned at the UK Government’s decision to appoint an anti-abortion group to a forum advising the government on sexual health.
“I am concerned that this move follows the political agenda which has developed in the USA where right wing evangelicals have a major say what is a very private and personal matter for the women concerned.
“I strongly believe in a woman’s right to choose what happens to her body. It must be up to the individual not a group who seek to impose their views on women.
“I understand that the British Pregnancy Advisory Service has been excluded from this forum and that the next step may be a move to try to alter the 1967 Abortion Act. We need to be vigilant to ensure this does not happen and, if necessary, make sure any changes do not apply in Wales.”
Leanne Wood added: “This is an anti-liberal move which may indicate that the Liberal Democrats have very little influence a Tory Government which seems determined to push their reactionary agenda.”
