Plans to prevent a critical road route between Mid and North Wales from closing regularly throughout the year due to flooding and accidents have been welcomed by Montgomeryshire AM, Russell George.
But he demanded urgent action to ensure work can begin soon on the bridge which transports the A487 trunk road and on to the main A493.
The Welsh Government has announced a “delivery team” is to be set up to consider options to develop the Dyfi Bridge. Local flooding means the bridge is often closed, creating a massive diversion for local people.
Accidents along the narrow bridge have also caused damage to the structure, resulting in its closure often in busy holiday periods.
Montgomeryshire AM Russell George, who has campaigned for urgent work to be undertaken on the bridge welcome the “delivery team.”
He undertook a local survey with local residents that identified the Dyfi Bridge issues as a major local concern.
“I’m very pleased that a delivery team is being put in place to resolve what is a serious issue for Machynlleth and neighbouring communities. The closure of Dyfi Bridge during flooding or as a result of accidents causes major problems that impact on peoples lives and economically on the area.
“We need fast and urgent action t resolve this. The announcement by the Welsh Government is welcome and I congratulate the ongoing campaigning of the Dyfi Bridge Steering Group and local county councilor Mike Williams.
“I’ll be meeting with local campaigners and discussing the issue with the Welsh Government to ensure we resolve this issue as soon as possible.”
Noella Elliott, Chair of the Dyfi Bridge Steering Committee added: “I am delighted on behalf of the Dyfi Bridge Steering Committee with this latest development.”
