Police Appeal: Assault On Post Officer Worker

South Wales Police is investigating an assault on a postman that occurred on Gabalfa Avenue, Gabalfa, Cardiff on Wednesday 13 January 2010 at 15:00hrs.

The postman was collecting mail at the post office on Gabalfa Avenue when a snowball was thrown into his back. He turned around to talk to the suspect who punched him to the right side of his face and headbutted him in the nose causing it to break and punched him again several times to the face.

Officers from the Fairwater Neighbourhood Policing Team were on foot patrol nearby and arrived at the scene within four or five minutes. The officers promptly arrested a man for Section 47 Assault. He has been released on bail pending further police investigation.

PC Nathan James of the Fairwater Neighbourhood Policing Team said,

“Assaults on Royal Mail workers will not be tolerated. We’re appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact us. The incident happened in front of the local Londis store, pharmacy and charity shop.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said:

“We can confirm that a postman was the victim of an unprovoked attack while carrying out his duties in the Gabalfa area of Cardiff on Wednesday afternoon (Jan 13).

“This was a particularly nasty incident, which resulted in the postman sustaining a fractured nose and cuts and bruises to his face. The postman is now recovering from the attack and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed it, or has any information, to contact the police or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
