North Wales Police has marked Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) history month by holding a series of events at Force Headquarters in Colwyn Bay.
February marks LGBT History month, which is an opportunity to celebrate the lives and achievements of the LGBT community, and officers and staff have been raising the profile of the month by hosting events at Force Headquarters in Colwyn Bay.
North Wales Police are also celebrating after retaining their place at 50th in the Stonewall Top 100 employers 2010.
Events during the month have included an awareness session with guest speakers, and a display at the reception of headquarters.
Sue Davison, Diversity Officer for North Wales Police said: “LGBT history month is a time to celebrate difference. North Wales Police is working hard to ensure that is has an inclusive workforce and one that is welcoming of minority groups.
“We are extremely pleased to be featured once again within the Stonewall Top 100 Employers. North Wales Police had an overall 10% increase in marks which helped us to retain our place at 50th. This position is a demonstration of the impact of the work completed during 2009.”
Advice and guidance leaflets have also been distributed to staff, regarding the support available to them and the support they could be offering to their colleagues.
She added: “As a consequence of perceived discrimination or harassment LGBT people may decide not to disclose their sexual orientation or be ‘out’ at work.
“Working in an ‘LGBT friendly environment’ has been shown to have a positive impact on LGBT workers, who are more likely to be ‘out’ at work. It fosters openness and confidence, improved work productivity and effectiveness as well as loyalty and pride in the organisation.”
