The Neighbourhood Police Team in Porthcawl is helping residents secure their property by giving out free shed alarms.
Porthcawl police will be visiting communities in the area to give advice on how residents can improve their shed security, in a bid to prevent crime and stop criminals from striking again, following recent bike thefts.
The Neighbourhood Police Team will be handing out the shed alarms in areas where there have been reports of thefts of bikes from sheds to prevent further offences. This includes visiting previous victims to help them avoid being targeted a second time by thieves.
PCSO Carl Wesgate said that by properly securing property residents can prevent themselves from becoming targets.
He said: “It is about preventing crime and making it as hard as possible for criminals. The alarms give added piece of mind to residents as well as acting as a deterrent for burglars. People need to make it hard for criminals to take their property. We have had thefts of bikes from sheds taking place in Porthcawl and this is a way to prevent these things from happening.”
Neighbourhood officers will also be patrolling areas in and around Porthcawl to target and deter thieves.
PCSO Jessica Davies added: “The alarm giveaway is in response to recent shed burglaries in the area which Neighbourhood Officers are investigating. We are determined to support our communities to prevent them becoming a victim of burglary and other crime. These alarms, along with practical crime prevention advice, will ensure people’s security is increased and hopefully keep thieves at bay”.
The Neighbourhood Police Team will be at Onit Sports, 4 Eastern Promenade, Porthcawl on Wednesday 16th July between 11am and 1pm to provide crime prevention advice and to give out free shed alarms.
PS Jason Jenkins from Porthcawl Police station explained: “We do only have a limited supply of the alarms. However they are available from DIY stores and are relatively inexpensive. They could see people saving a lot in the long run. We are also carrying out patrols at key times to prevent any further offences and to target offenders”.
He added: “Whilst most people are aware of the importance of home security, not so many think about the security of their garden sheds. Of course burglary of any kind can cause a great deal of distress for people. This is just one of the ways we are working with our partners to make Porthcawl a safer place for everyone”.
