Improvements in car parking enforcement in Swansea have been praised by South Wales Police.
Swansea Council took over control of parking enforcement in September last year and since then has issued over 30,000 fixed penalties to motorists who have ignored parking regulations.
In total, 30,668 were issued from September 2008 until the end of November 2009. Of these, 7,395 were issued in car parks and the remainder were issued to vehicles parked on the road.
South Wales Police has highlighted significant improvements at city centre hotspots such as Wind Street.
PC Warren Williams from South Wales Police said: “There’s been a significant improvement in the city centre in terms of parking problems. We will continue to support the Council in its efforts to ensure motorists comply with parking regulations.”
The Council is aiming to address problems both in the city centre and in local communities. Parking on double yellow lines and in bus stops as well as staying in temporary parking bays longer than permitted and parking in resident’s bays without a permit will all earn motorists a fixed penalty.
Cllr John Hague, Cabinet Member for the Environment in Swansea Council, said: “Clearly our parking enforcement teams are proving effective throughout Swansea in terms of improving parking problems.
“We receive a lot of calls from residents and businesses asking us for assistance in addressing parking problems and we work hard to meet their expectations.
“The work of our parking enforcement team should send out a clear message to motorists that we will not tolerate inconsiderate parking. Our priority is to ensure that people park where they are supposed to and do not cause obstructions for emergency vehicles or block off access points for people with disabilities.
“Our message to motorists is simple: if you park legally, you won’t face a fine.”
