Public order trained officers are inviting residents to an open event in Rhymney this week, to explain their role and show how they diffuse potential confrontational situations.
Officers from the Gwent Police Support Group will be holding the event at Rhymney Comprehensive School on Thursday 22nd July between 12 noon and 3pm.
All officers involved in public order work undergo specialist training where they learn how to cope with various situations, such as controlling a crowd and dealing with violent offenders.
They also learn tactics about how to police large public events, such as football matches and the forthcoming Ryder Cup.
Members of the public are invited to come along to watch the live training event, have the opportunity to try on the protective equipment they use, and learn more about how difficult it can be to deal with confrontational situations.
Sergeant Jonathan Harris from the Gwent Police Support Group, said: “Our public order police officers undergo regular training so that they are well-equipped to deal with a wide range of situations, should they need to. This open session will teach people more about our role and give them the opportunity to ask questions. They will also be able to see how we train and the equipment that we use.”
Inspector Fran Richley from the Rhymney Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “I hope local residents take the opportunity to come along and find out more about the work of our Support Group. The majority of public order training takes place in specialist facilities, so we are very pleased to be hosting them in Rhymney.”
