Police prize for young Welsh learner

YsgolyLlys002A Prestatyn school girl has been rewarded by North Wales Police for her efforts in learning Welsh.

For the past three years staff from the Administration of Justice Department (AJD) in Prestatyn have been attending regular classes at Ysgol y Llys in a bid to improve their Welsh.

As a thank you to the school, the department decided to present the learner of the year with a special glass plaque, and last week Erin Price became the first recipient of the award.

Erin moved to the school from Manchester two years ago, and staff at the Welsh school agreed she was the most deserving of the award as she has demonstrated that she is the most improved learner.

Julie Foster, head of AJD said: “We decided to reward a child because the school has supported us so much in learning Welsh. As a learner myself I recognise that it can be a challenge, but it is also great fun.”

“Pupils and staff at the school have helped police staff and officers to gain confidence in speaking Welsh, and we wanted to show how grateful we are.”

Headmaster Dyfan Phillips added: “It is very important for us to develop links and to work with the police.”

At a special service the school, which has 98% of its pupils coming from English families, also presented numerous children with certificates for their efforts in speaking Welsh.
