Domestic Violence, Healthy Relationships and Internet Safety, were all headline subjects being addressed by South Wales Police School Liaison Officers at a conference for school teachers held this week.
The event, held on Tuesday 28th January at The Conference Centre, Treforest, was organised by the All Wales School Core Programme and aimed to raise awareness of key issues affecting young people today, whilst making them aware of a variety of tools and resources now available.
Opening the conference South Wales Police, Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Sophie Howe said:
“It is vitally important that we speak to as many people as possible about these issues and have a collective focus on educating young people about the things they need to be aware of or look out for.
“How many of us know someone who has been affected by at least one of these issues. We know that Domestic Violence is under reported and that there is an increasing number of young people finding themselves in difficult relationships. Internet Safety is also a growing concern for authorities and families alike, as children and teenagers gain more un-supervised access to adult internet content.
“We also know that children are all too frequently being targeted by paedophiles via the internet, and that they are trading in indecent images which young people can be lured to upload themselves.
“South Wales Police work very closely with CEOP, the Child Exploitation Online Protection Centre and are specifically targeting offenders utilising a wide range of policing resources.
“But there are also steps that we can take; teachers, parents, carers, to make sure that young people not only have the confidence to confide in us, but also to ensure that when they do, we know what advice to give and what steps to take to ensure their safety.”
Lessons developed by the All Wales School Core Programme focus on supporting teachers in the education of school children in a wide range of subjects areas.
