Pontardawe town centre has been given another cash boost

Thanks to a £325,000 Welsh Government grant, the second phase of street scene improvements in the centre of Pontardawe can soon get underway.

The funding is part of the Western Valleys Regeneration Area programme to improve the appearance and accessibility of town centres whilst helping to boost their local economies.

The money will enable enhancement works to the main shopping street in the town. It will include new paving and street furniture, signage and lighting, upgrading of parking facilities and traffic management improvements.

The work is part of the Council’s wider masterplan to secure the economic future of the town, in particular for local businesses, and to support the development of tourism and cultural events.

The first phase of the regeneration programme is already well underway with some projects such as the enhancement of Herbert Square area nearing completion.

A distinct entrance feature at the gateway to Cwm Du Glen has been created with new planting, a seating area and a new paved square at The Cross.

A new footbridge has been installed at Cwm Du Glen to link Pontardawe town centre to the footpaths in the Swansea Valley.

Council Leader Ali Thomas said “This is excellent news for the people of Pontardawe. The Council is working hard behind the scenes to secure funding to improve our town centres and valleys communities and I am pleased to see our ambitious plans for Pontardawe coming to fruition.

We will continue to work hard to promote the county borough as an attractive place to live, visit and invest in.”

Housing, Regeneration and Heritage Minister Huw Lewis said: “This funding will help make towns in the western valleys more accessible places to shop, socialise and do business, whilst improving the appearance of streets and buildings.

“I hope this will help entice shoppers and visitors back into these centres and also encourage greater investment from both local traders and larger companies.”
