Pontrhydyfen Primary School in the Afan Valley has won a top green award.
At a Neath Port Talbot Environment Forum presentation evening this week, the school were joint winners in the ‘Green School of the Year’ category.
They were rewarded for the huge amount of environmental work being carried out within the school and out in the school grounds.
Judges commended the school for its strong commitment to teaching children how to save energy and how to recycle and also in encouraging them to travel to school in a sustainable way.
They were also pleased to see how environmental issues were fed into the day to day curriculum evidenced by the work done in pupils’ books.
Acting Headteacher, Gillian Jones, is delighted that the pupils’ work has been recognised.
“I am pleased Pontrhydyfen has been awarded ‘Green School of the Year’.
“Everyone here enjoys being part of the eco committee and we are working hard towards achieving our fourth green eco flag.
“We look forward to being the first school in Neath Port Talbot to accomplish this.
“Environmental issues are very important to us and are included in many of our curricular areas.
“We all play our part in promoting these issues, staff and children alike, to protect our world for the future.”
Council Leader, Ali Thomas, added, “My congratulations go to the school on winning this award.
“Pupils have done a considerable amount of work and their efforts deserve to be recognised.
“Thanks must also go to school staff and parents who support the children to do their environmental projects.”
