Pontypool library to close for two weeks

Pontypool library is set to close for two weeks as part of plans to give it a £300,000 makeover.

Subject to listed building consent, the popular library will undergo a major refurbishment following a Community Learning Libraries Development Fund grant from the Welsh Assembly Government.

The library is set to close at 4pm on Saturday, October 23.

Services will cease for two weeks as staff set up a temporary service at the former Pontypool Register Office.

Most of the services that are currently offered will be available at the temporary service that will be up and running by November 9.

These include a wide selection of books, audiobooks, CDs and DVDs to borrow and newspapers and magazines to read.

Although there will be a reduced number of computers available, customers will still be able to use the Internet and word processing facilities free of charge.

Library staff will be on hand to answer enquiries for information and study.

The modernised library, which celebrated its centenary in 2008, is expected to reopen in late spring 2011, and provide a more comfortable and contemporary environment for its customers.

“The refurbished library will be able to offer a wider range of services,” said Councillor Lewis Jones, deputy leader of Torfaen council.

“There will be a more open layout on the ground floor and the basement, which is currently only accessible only to staff, will be brought into public use as a computer suite and community meeting room.

“The refurbished library will be fully accessible for wheelchair users, with the construction of a glazed canopy at the side of the building to accommodate a new door opening to the ground floor and a disabled lift to the basement level.”

Customers who have difficulty accessing the former register office can contact the library to enquire about a temporary library@home service or details of their nearest mobile library stop.
