As the £10.5million Pontypridd Regeneration Project is about to enter its first phase, the Council’s contractor will open a work’s compound in a town centre car park.
The Mill Street Car Park, which is run by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, will close from January 31st 2011.
This will allow contractors Costain Ltd to establish a construction compound for material being used in the regeneration project itself.
The car park will remain closed for more than two years while the extensive scheme is undertaken throughout the town centre. Other car parks in Pontypridd will remain open, including Sardis Road, Catherine’s Corner, Goods Yard and Berw Road. Additionally to enhance car parking in the town cent Gas Road car park will be resurfaced in the next few months.
Mill Street Car Park is situated near the Brunel viaduct, alongside the A4058, and the site will now be used for four temporary buildings to provide supporting facilities essential for the high profile and extensive regeneration scheme.
Planning Permission for the compound was granted by Councillors at the Taff Ely Development Control Committee in November 2010.
Brian Greaves, Community Relations Manager for Costain said: “It is important to have a compound close to the works, and with significant constraints within the town centre, the car park at Mill Street is most suitable in both size and proximity.
“We very much regret any inconvenience the closure will cause to those who regularly use the car park, but would stress that the options for a compound were extremely limited and there is alternative parking nearby at Sardis Road, St Catherine’s Corner and other locations in the town centre”..
The first phase of the works programme will commence in Mill Street on the 14th February 2011 and signal the start of the £10.5m regeneration package for Pontypridd that will include major remodelling of the street scene in and around Taff Street, High Street, Market Street, Church Street and Mill Street.
The project is receiving financial support from the Welsh Assembly Government through the European Regional Development Fund and Targeted Match Fund as well as council and private sector contributions. The funding will also support grants to private sector property owners to carry out high quality improvements to internal and external parts of their business premises.
