Pontypridd Roll Of Honour Published For Consultation

A revised Roll of Honour, naming all those from Pontypridd who lost their lives serving in the two world wars and subsequent conflicts, has now been released.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Pontypridd Town Council, who are working together to erect a War Memorial in the town, have received amendments and additions to the comprehensive list published in March. In publishing this revised Roll of Honour, they are again urging people to get in touch if any further changes are needed.

The final Roll of Honour will adorn a new monument in Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, .The list comprises nearly 1,300 names of people from Pontypridd, as defined by the former Urban District and Town Council boundaries, who lost their lives serving their country and fighting for freedom.

All efforts have been made to ensure the Roll of Honour is as complete and accurate as possible. Anyone wishing to comment on the list of names is requested to do so by  Friday 1 July 2011. It may not be possible for amendments to be made after this date due to the commencement of the construction of the memorial.

Councillor Simon Lloyd, Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf, said: “Due to an official Roll of Honour for Pontypridd not being readily available, the Council and its partners have had to work with the records available and compile this ourselves.

“We are particularly grateful to former Pontypridd Town Councillor, Ray Baldwin, whose time consuming original research provided an initial list of names to work from, and to David Hughes of the South Wales Branch of the Western Front Association| for his experience and knowledge of these matters for his experience and knowledge of these matters.

“Unfortunately, given the constraints we face, there is inevitably the potential for some errors and omissions, which is why we want the public’s help to once again check whether the Roll of Honour is as accurate as possible. However, it is important to point out that the compilation of the Roll of Honour, and therefore the entire project, would not be achievable without tolerating some potential margin of error.

“We believe that establishing a permanent memorial to the names of the people from Pontypridd, who lost their lives serving from World War I onwards, is a very worthy project and one deserving of continued support and effort.”

Cllr Gwen Williams, the Mayor of Pontypridd said, “The Town Council is heartened to see the considerable progress that has been made towards the War Memorial project being realised. I hope many more residents of Pontypridd give their support to the building of the Memorial which will be a fitting tribute to those who had lost their lives in the course of conflict.”
