Porth Shop Local Launch goes International

A campaign to encourage more people to shop locally by “popping into Porth” has reached international levels already!

Shopkeepers in the town joined forces with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Regeneration and Planning division last week to officially launch their Shop Local campaign.

They are determined to fight back against the recession by celebrating the charm and welcoming environment of their town, which has been a community hub for hundreds of years.

At the launch event, over 600 Shop Local shopping bags and shopping list memo pads were handed out to customers and visitors –including to one lady who has already sent the mementoes on to her daughters in Japan and London!

Traders also launched their official Loyalty Card scheme, which offers customers the chance to collect stamps towards discounts and free items.

Ian Howells of Howells Newsagents, who is Chairman of the Chamber of Trade in Porth, said: “The sun shone all day as we officially launched our campaign to protect the history, heritage and wonderful welcome of Porth.

“These are difficult times and we are keen to remind people across the Rhondda and beyond about the unique nature of our town centres.

“The traders in the town –from High Street names to unique boutiques – are determined to do what they can to attract shoppers for generations to come to our town centre.

“As well as fighting back against the financial climate that has hit us all so hard, we are also keen to do our bit to protect the environment and one of the known benefits of shopping locally is that it is kinder to our planet, reduces car journeys and celebrates local products that have not had to be imported or transported.”

Cllr Paul Cannon, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Safer Communities, said: “The efforts of the traders and communities in Porth must be commended and I hope that everyone takes notice of the Shop Local campaign.

Porth is one of our strategic town centres and we consider it to be a hidden treasure, one that all should seek out and enjoy.

“Shop Local is just one of a number of initiatives and events running in Porth in the future. Visit www.porth.biz to find out more.”
