Porthcawl RNLI was requested to launch to assist a young family who had broken down in a small cabin cruiser off Rest Bay late on Friday night.
Porthcawl Lifeboat Rose of the Shires was launched in freezing conditions late on Friday night to a small cabin cruiser which had broken down at Rest Bay Porthcawl.
Swansea Coastguard had taken a phone call from the casualty vessel requesting assistance. Their main engine had failed along with their outboard back up engine and had no means of propulsion. The cabin cruiser had just been purchased from Swansea and was been brought back to a mooring in Porthcawl by its new owner. On board were four adults and an 18 month old baby who were very cold.
Porthcawl Lifeboat with Tim Morgan at the Helm arrived on scene to find the casualty vessel struggling against the tide and very close to rocks.
The RNLI lifeboat volunteers very quickly set up a tow back to Porthcawl harbour. The baby and her mother were taken off the boat at Porthcawl slip by awaiting shore crew and Coastguards where they were taken inside the lifeboat station to asses their condition.
The lifeboat then towed the casualty vessel into the harbour were it was safely put on a mooring. The remaining passengers were then taken ashore by the lifeboat volunteers.
Phil Missen Lifeboat Operations Manager explains : ‘It is very good of our volunteer crew to give up their time in freezing conditions late on a Friday night. Many of them responded to the call even though they are spending time with their own families, but they’re also happy to go and help anyone who finds themselves in difficulty at time of day or night. ‘
Members of the public can visit the RNLI website for advice on sea safety and the use of lifejackets and emergency equipment.”
