Council House rent will rise by 5.2% in April, despite some councillors claiming the rise is too high.
In a meeting of Powys County Councils management board today (Feb 1) a proposal to set a rent for 2011/12 that reflects guidelines set by the Welsh Assembly was discussed and the councils board were asked to support a rise of 5.2%.
Councillor Russell George speaking on behalf of the Councils Conservative group said:
“The Conservative group were not prepared to support such a high increase. An assembly guideline or not a rise of 5.2% is going to be particularly difficult to ask this group of people to pay at a time when wages are not going up. This is the wrong time to be hiking up Council house rent”
The Conservative proposal put forward for a lower rate was supported by the councils Labour group. But a rise of 5.2% will take affect form 4th April 2011 following the Liberal Democrat group along with Independent councillors voting for the full increase.
