Denbighshire County Council has paid tribute to its teams of staff that have been working tirelessly over the Christmas and New Year period to keep main roads clear of ice and snow during the current prolonged cold spell.
Teams have been working around the clock to grit principle routes across the county and all routes have remained open, with the exception of the Horseshoe Pass which has been temporarily closed on a few occasions.
Along with many other Councils, salt stocks in Denbighshire have become depleted during the holiday period. However, there are sufficient stocks to continue with normal gritting routines on priority roads for the next week. The council has not received notification of its next salt delivery, but it is expected that the council will receive a ‘drip-feed’ of supplies to meet the needs of priority routes.
In light of this national situation the Council is not able to guarantee a gritting service for side and minor roads or the filling of roadside grit bins.
Councillor Eryl Williams, Cabinet Lead Member for Environment, said: “Teams of staff have been working around the clock to ensure our arterial routes have been open and safe for members of the public. This has involved a significant commitment through the holiday period including several overnight gritting shifts.
“Teams have worked tirelessly over the past few weeks with staff from a number of departments responding to weather problems, dealing with phone calls and planning, and with the forecast for more cold weather over the coming few weeks, we are asking members of the public to bear with us during this extremely challenging time and we would like to thank all residents in advance for their co-operation.
“Many other council services, such as the Home Care service have also had to cope with a lot of snow and ice and have managed to carry out their work, often on foot and in some cases with the help of tractors. With the help of families in some cases, all necessary calls were made over the festive period.”
Meanwhile, with the more freezing temperatures forecast and the possibility of more snow in the coming week, Denbighshire County Council is urging the public to take extra care on the county’s roads and to allow extra time for journeys.
