Prestatyn Primary school review – an update

Denbighshire’s Cabinet has approved plans to publish statutory notices following a review of primary school provision in the Prestatyn area.

Statutory notices will be published regarding:

  • The proposed amalgamation of Bodnant Infants and Bodnant Junior Schools, Prestatyn into a two form entry  (60 pupils per year group) all-through school on the existing sites from 1 January 2012.
  • The proposed expansion of Ysgol y Llys into a two form entry (60 pupils per year group ) from 1 September 2014.

There has been widespread consultation on these proposals, including with schools and governors, local councillors, AMs/MPs and the town council. Parents and other members of the public were also given an opportunity to comment on the proposals.

Councillor Eryl Williams, Cabinet Lead Member for Lifelong Learning, said: “The Council is committed to providing a first class education for all children and young people in the county, with modernising education being one of the council’s top priorities.

“We have a responsibility to ensure that our schools are sustainable and fit for purpose, to allow our children and young people have the widest opportunities available to them and are able to reach their full potential.”

“We have considered the feedback received as part of the consultation and have concluded that proceeding with the statutory notice to amalgamate both Bodnant Infants and Junior schools is the correct course of action based on educational arguments.

“We believe that we should also proceed with the statutory notice for Ysgol y Llys,   as the proposal would allow the authority to increase access to Welsh medium education in the north of the county.”

The statutory notices are to be published on the 10th November. Following the publication of the statutory notices, people have two months to submit objections. The authority will then be required within one month of the close of the objection consultation period to submit details of any objections received, together with the authority’s response, to the Welsh Assembly Government.

If no objections are received, the authority will make the decision. If objections are received, then the matter is decided by the Welsh Assembly Government.
