Work is due to begin on improving access for disabled people and people with mobility difficulties as well as further works to modernise the Prestatyn Railway Station.
When finished, the works will also improve access to the Offa’s Dyke trail, the beach, town centre and nearby tourist attractions for all users, bringing the station up to date and providing a pleasant gateway to the town of Prestatyn.
Denbighshire County Council is working in partnership with Network Rail as part of its Disability Discrimination Act 2005 (DDA) enhancement programme. The work includes replacing the footbridge to the island platform and other minor infrastructure improvement works, forming part of a wider scheme of refurbishment to the railway station building, the platform and adjacent road bridge.
The work is being carried out by Network Rail and the improvements will include artwork to be funded by Denbighshire’s Area Regeneration department.
Work starts on Monday, 8th February 2010. Network Rail is carrying out the initial works for improving the lower end of the High Street in Prestatyn and during the first week, the appointed contractor will set up a compound in the car park to the north of the Railway Station with actual work to replace the existing footbridge due to start on site on Monday, 15th February 2010.
It is expected the work will take 10-12 months to complete and during this time access will be via a temporary footbridge next to the road bridge over the railway line. The public right of way will be diverted along the newly widened footway over the road bridge during the works.
As well as the footbridge works, work to refurbish the road bridge over the railway line is also planned. This will take approximately 8 weeks and will involve temporary traffic controls, due to start on Monday, 8th February 2010.
Denbighshire County Council would like to thank motorists and passengers in advance for their patience and cooperation during the planned works and would like to emphasise that businesses in the vicinity of the Railway Station will remain open for business as usual.
