The Children’s Commissioner for Wales has praised Flintshire County Council’s Social Services for Children department for its two ‘Pride of Flintshire’ award ceremonies, which were held recently.
The events at the Beaufort Park Hotel in Mold were to celebrate the many achievements and successes of children who are looked after by the Council and care leavers.
The children and young people were nominated by foster carers, parents and social workers in numerous categories:
- Sport
- Music, Dance & Drama
- Academic Studies
- Citizenship
- Well Done Award
The children and young people were not only commended on achievement but also for their effort.
There were also three specific awards presented for the outstanding hard work and achievements of care leavers.
One young person was awarded an achievement award for her exceptional sporting talent. Others were commended for taking part in after-school drama activities and many more were making excellent progress at school. Another had completed a Skill-Build course and secured an apprenticeship.
The ceremonies featured musical performances from the children and were thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended including children, parents, foster carers, staff, councillors and staff from Social Services.
The Children’s Commissioner for Wales, Keith Towler, attended and, afterwards in his blog, said it had been:
“… an uplifting experience built on the achievements of children and young people… Like everyone in the room I was inspired by what I had seen and heard. It was a real privilege to be a small part of the celebration. And what a celebration… More than anything these children and young people felt valued.”
Social Services for Children would like to thank local business who donated prizes for the children including; Atlantic Chambers, The Beaufort Park Hotel, Debenhams, Gill Parry Balloons, moneysupermarket.com, Stanley Place Chambers and WH Smith.
