Thomas Søndergård, Principal Conductor of BBC National Orchestra of Wales, will lead the Orchestra in concert at Swansea’s Grand Theatre on Friday 21 February.
Now in his second season as Principal Conductor of the Orchestra, Thomas returns to Swansea to conduct Mozart’s tragic Fortieth Symphony. The symphony was composed whilst Mozart was at the peak of his creativity, and yet faced poverty and family tragedy. The concert also features Bartók’s Divertimento, a piece that shows off the virtuosity of the Orchestra’s string players.
Thomas Søndergård explains: “I’m really looking forward to going back to Swansea, as we have a wonderful programme to share with the supportive audiences at the Grand Theatre. I’m particularly excited about Bartók’s Divertimento – it’s a piece I’ve been saving for BBC NOW as they have a fantastic string section.
“There’s also a gem for the whole orchestra to play, Mozart’s Symphony No 40 – and who doesn’t love Mozart 40? It’s a beautiful piece, and a chance to get back to the simplicity of Mozart’s music.”
The Orchestra will be joined on stage by cellist Alban Gerhardt, a former member of BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artists scheme. Alongside the Orchestra, he will perform the romantic Cello Concerto by Samuel Barber, a composer best-known for his beloved Adagio for Strings.
Tickets are priced at £12.50-£15.50 (discounts available), and can be booked through the Orchestra’s Audience Line on 0800 052 1812.
Alternatively, tickets can be bought through the Grand Theatre by calling 01792 475715.
