Writer, historian and Welsh language campaigner, Hywel Teifi Edwards had died after a short illness at the Ty Bryngwyn Hospice in Llanelli.
Hywel Teifi Edwards (15 October 1934 – 4 January 2010), was a Welsh academic and historian, and an author in the Welsh language. He was the father of BBC newsreader Huw Edwards.
Born and brought up in Llanddewi, Aberarth, Ceredigion, Edwards attended Aberaeron Grammar School and the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. He taught Welsh at Garw Grammar School, where he met his wife Aerona, before becoming a lecturer in Welsh literature at University of Wales, Swansea.
He stood twice for Plaid Cymru as an MP.
Iona Jones, S4C’s Chief Executive, said, “Professor Hywel Teifi Edwards was a regular contributor to S4C and was an astute commentator and scholar, full of enthusiasm and wit. Above all else he was an excellent communicator. He will be sorely missed by the nation and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.”
