Finishing touches are underway as the latest chapter in the revival of Swansea’s Guildhall draws to a close.
The upgrade of the Central Block, which is the current phase in the refurbishment of Swansea’s Grade 1 listed Civic Building, is on schedule to be handed over before Christmas.
The Central Block was added in the 1970s and is more contemporary in its design and features to the rest of the Guildhall.
It is undergoing a £4.3 million refurbishment after a condition survey identified issues which would not only affect its long-term operational future but would also impact on more historically significant sections of the building.
The Council is additionally taking the opportunity to make the building more energy efficient.
Cllr Chris Holley, Swansea Council Leader, said: “We had to act to tackle important issues raised in the condition survey undertaken just over five years ago but the work will also result in improved energy efficiency and reductions in utility bills.
“Whilst this block is less historic, the work is needed to ensure the Guildhall is a working building from which we can serve our communities for generations to come.
“I am delighted that the work is on schedule for completion.”
The condition survey undertaken in the Central Block in 2005 found the heating and electrical services had exceeded their design life and required replacement.
The building fabric was also in poor condition with the roof, internal finishes and sanitary accommodation in need of upgrading.
Work to the Central Block started in November 2009 and is due to be completed this December.
The open-plan office design has maximised the floor space of the building.
New heating and lighting control systems are also being installed which will improve energy efficiency and generate future utility savings.
The work has progressed with the minimum of disruption to other building occupants and the Guildhall remains fully operational as the work proceeds.
Martin Nicholls, Swansea Council’s Head of Corporate Building and Property Services, said: “The Council is continuing to progress a significant programme of improvement to an iconic building which will help preserve the heritage of Swansea.
“This will ensure it’s not only fit for purpose accommodation for many years to come but also meets modern energy efficiency needs.”
