Usk Campus rugby development squad made an impressive start to their league campaign with a home win over Chepstow Comprehensive earlier this month.
Coleg Gwent gained clean line-out ball from second row Mark Wheeler, passing to scrum-half Ryan Joyce, who was then able to release quick ball to outside half Lewis Bury and pass onto centre and Man of the Match Lewis Hinwood who beat five defenders to score the first of his three tries.
From the forwards displaying a strong set piece and winning the gain line battle through big carrying forwards Josh Barrett, Ashley Teague and Joel Kendall, the backs were then able to finish off the play. Other tries came from impressive wing Zac Takel and ever impressive speed man Lewis Hinwood. Outside half Lewis Bury showed a great kicking display giving his pack of forwards good field position and adding more points.
Chepstow showed great defence but increasing pressure from Usk Campus developed into more tries being scored from back row forward Josh Barrett and Lewis Hinwood. Chepstow showed great determination finishing off with a good forwards try but failed to convert making the score 45 – 5.
Coaches Betts, Wood and Brake were pleased with the performance as much as the result: “The squad played well and demonstrated good passages of play, we are pleased to get a win under our belts.”
